3 Days Draa valley Desert Trek itinerary
Your adventure begins in Ouarzazate, the gateway to Morocco’s mystical landscapes. The journey sets off along a scenic road crossing the impressive Jebel Saghro massif, rising to 1,660 meters. From here, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramas over vast rocky desert terrain as the road unfolds through the heart of southern Morocco, following the contours of the legendary Draa Valley.
As you descend, the landscape gradually transforms into a rich contrast of lush palm groves, hidden oases, traditional ksour, and ancient kasbahs. Each turn of the road reveals a new facet of this timeless region, slowly guiding you toward the historic town of Zagora.
A short stop is made en route before continuing the journey toward the starting point of your trek in the heart of the Tagounite palm grove. From here, your walking expedition begins through the oasis, with a visit to the ksar and village of Sidi Salah, before heading toward the golden Tidri dunes, where your desert bivouac awaits among the sands for an unforgettable night under the stars.
Day 2: Tidri Desert | Ergh Sahel :
The day begins with an optional short ascent of Mount Tidri, rewarding you with spectacular panoramic views over the Draa Valley and its surrounding desert landscapes. Along the way, you may also encounter ancient tumuli, silent traces of early human presence in this remote region.
The trek continues across a vast rocky desert plateau (reg), scattered with occasional acacia trees, before gradually reaching the impressive dunes of Erg Sahel. This transition from stone desert to soft sand marks one of the most beautiful contrasts of the journey.
You then cross the majestic dune field toward your desert bivouac, set up in the heart of the dunes. Lunch is served on site, surrounded by silence and endless desert scenery.
In the afternoon, enjoy free time to explore the dunes at your own pace, taking in the peace, vastness, and unique atmosphere of the Sahara.
The final day begins with a beautiful morning walk through the dunes, where soft light enhances the peaceful atmosphere of the Sahara. It’s a quiet and memorable start to your last moments in the desert.
You then continue your caravan across a variety of landscapes, moving between rolling dunes and vast open plains dotted with acacia and tamarisk trees. This changing scenery offers a final glimpse of the diverse beauty of the region.
The route leads you to the dunes of Lahniti, which you cross before reaching the dry bed of the Draa River, where you meet your team for a well-deserved lunch break.
In the afternoon, you begin your return journey to Ouarzazate, carrying with you the lasting impressions of the desert’s silence, light, and vast horizons.
A stop is planned at Ksar Tamgroute, a site of great historical importance. Here, you may visit the ancient Koranic school (madrasa) if open, and discover the village’s renowned heritage of traditional pottery, famous for its distinctive green glaze and centuries-old craftsmanship.
